Boardwalk FAQ

We’ve heard a lot of great questions from our community about the Skowhegan River Park Boardwalk — and how its construction will impact Skowhegan residents and visitors. To help keep everyone informed, we’ve gathered some of the most common questions and answers here.

This page will be updated regularly as the project progresses, so check back often. And remember, you can always stop in at the Skowhegan Outdoors Basecamp Gear Library at 65 Water Street — in the back of Joe’s Flat Iron Café — for the latest news, maps, and updates in person.

Project Overview

Construction timelines in active project areas will be communicated in advance through email, social media, and this page. We will update expected completion windows as the project moves through phases. We know that uncertainty is frustrating, and we're committed to giving you as much advance notice as possible before any access changes take effect in your area.

For the latest news and updates on the project's progress and timeline, you can always stop in at the Skowhegan Outdoors Basecamp Gear Library at 65 Water Street — in the back of Joe's Flat Iron Café.

The Boardwalk Project is led by Main Street Skowhegan, working alongside the project engineer, architect, and contractor.

Getting Around During Construction

Pedestrian access along the riverfront will be rerouted as needed, with clearly marked temporary paths and signage to guide you safely through or around active work zones. The Walking Bridge will be closed for the duration of construction, but other existing river crossings will remain accessible. An alternate pedestrian river crossing is in the works and will be signed and communicated ahead of time.

Maps and route information are available at the Skowhegan Outdoors Basecamp Gear Library at 65 Water Street — in the back of Joe's Flat Iron Café.

A handful of spaces in the riverside parking lot (along the river, directly behind The Bankery) will be unavailable due to construction. Once construction of Phase 1 is complete, all spaces will reopen.

Maintaining access to local businesses is a priority. There will be no disruption to Water Street businesses on the street side. Construction will be restricted to the riverside lot behind Water Street businesses. Driving access and parking will be open in the riverside lot during construction; if the, access needs to be restricted for safety reasons, we will communicate this ahead of time in order to coordinate deliveries.

Noise, Safety, Daily Life

Construction will be conducted during standard daytime working hours in compliance with the Town's noise ordinance. We do not anticipate nighttime or early morning work except in cases of genuine necessity, which would be communicated in advance.

Safety is the top priority for both workers and the public. All active work zones will be clearly fenced and signed, with pedestrian pathways routed safely away from hazards. Please follow all posted signage and do not enter fenced or closed work areas. If you observe an unsafe condition, please contact us immediately.

In the event that it becomes necessary to disrupt power, gas, or water to any businesses or residencies located adjacent to the construction site, it will be communicated to affected residents and businesses with as much advance notice as possible — typically no less than 48 hours. Unplanned interruptions will be addressed as quickly as possible and communicated through standard channels.

Looking Ahead

The completed boardwalk will provide a safe, accessible, and scenic pedestrian pathway along the Kennebec River. It will include seating areas, improved lighting, and connections to existing sidewalk and trail networks — creating a true riverfront gathering space for the Skowhegan community.

Updates will be posted on this page and shared on social media channels. We encourage residents to check back regularly for the latest information. Maps and printed materials are also available at the Skowhegan Outdoors Basecamp Gear Library at 65 Water Street.

Yes. Community input has shaped this project from the beginning, and we will continue to create opportunities for residents to share feedback. You're always welcome to reach out to Main Street Skowhegan directly with questions or comments.
