Events and competitions will play an important role in the long-term success of the Skowhegan River Park, attracting paddlers, spectators, and outdoor enthusiasts who support local businesses while showcasing the Kennebec River and the Skowhegan community to new audiences.

As plans for the whitewater park continue to advance, Main Street Skowhegan is already taking steps to establish the Kennebec River Gorge as a destination for paddlesports. In 2026, Main Street Skowhegan was awarded funding from the Somerset County Commissioners to purchase slalom gates and engage a technical consultant to design and install a canoe and kayak slalom course in the gorge. The course will create new opportunities for training, skill development, youth programming, and competition while laying the groundwork for future whitewater events.

The slalom course will support local paddlers, youth development programs, and instructional opportunities through Main Street Skowhegan’s Skowhegan Outdoors initiative. It will also position Skowhegan to host slalom races and paddlesports events, including opportunities through the New England Slalom Series, a club of the American Canoe Association that hosts races throughout the region.

Once the whitewater park is constructed, the slalom course will remain an important component of the river recreation experience, complementing the adjustable surf wave and other whitewater features. Together, these amenities will allow Skowhegan to host a diverse range of events, from grassroots competitions and youth training camps to regional and national paddling and river surfing events.

Like other successful river communities across the country, Skowhegan envisions a future where recreation, community events, and outdoor culture strengthen the local economy while creating opportunities for residents and visitors alike to connect with the river. These events will bring participants and spectators who not only recreate on the river and trails, but also shop, dine, stay overnight, and explore everything Skowhegan and the region have to offer.
