River Access

With steep, rocky banks, Skowhegan’s downtown Kennebec River Gorge is nearly inaccessible. A set of rickety portage stairs next to the hydro dam serve as the only access into the gorge at present.

Enhanced river access will ensure that Skowhegan’s gorge is more than just a pretty backdrop for downtown. Access options on both sides of the river will connect the Skowhegan community to its most valuable resource, the Kennebec River and make the gorge accessible to all.

Planned access enhancements include:

  • Riverside trail and ADA ramp from the switchback on the Debe River Walk to the top two features of the whitewater park on river right (south side bank just downriver from the walking bridge)
  • Stairs descending to the water from downtown (north side bank below walking bridge) providing access to the natural channel on river left for floating
  • Riverside trail to the water’s edge from the end of the Debe River Walk / Joyce Street providing as a takeout option for those paddling or floating the gorge and as an access trail to the proposed third whitewater feature at the mouth of the Big Eddy

In addition to connecting the community to the river, the north side stairs and promenade will connect the downtown to the river. River users will have easy access to eateries, shops, and electric vehicle charging stations located in the municipal parking lot.
