For generations, the Kennebec River has shaped Skowhegan's history, economy, and identity. Yet much of the downtown riverfront became disconnected from everyday community life.
The Skowhegan River Park seeks to transform that relationship by reconnecting people to the river through recreation, environmental stewardship, public access, and community gathering spaces. First envisioned in 1999 and championed by residents through the Skowhegan Strategic Plan for Community Transformation, the River Park represents a long-term investment in the health, vitality, and future of our community.
More than a recreation project, the River Park is civic infrastructure. Together with Main Street Skowhegan's Skowhegan Outdoors initiative, it will create new opportunities to access the outdoors, strengthen connections to the Kennebec River, support environmental stewardship, improve quality of life, and drive sustainable economic growth throughout the region.
Imagine a downtown where residents can walk from local businesses directly to the riverfront, launch a kayak, cast a fishing line, attend a community event, explore miles of trails, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the Kennebec River.
Imagine young people learning to paddle through free community programs, families accessing outdoor recreation regardless of income, visitors traveling to Skowhegan for nationally recognized events, and community members gathering along the riverfront throughout the year.
This is the vision of the Skowhegan River Park: a place where recreation, conservation, community, and economic opportunity come together to create a stronger future for Skowhegan.
