The Vision

Skowhegan will be a thriving small town, known as an outdoor recreation mecca with a vibrant local food and craft brew scene.

Free and open to all, the Skowhegan River Park will offer recreation opportunities galore. Kayak or surf the wave features in the whitewater park on river right or tube the natural channel on river left.

After you paddle or float the river, stroll along a two-mile riverfront promenade or the Debe River Walk; ride miles of singletrack on a mountain bike or explore multi-use trails on 300 acres in the heart of town; fish in pristine waters; or experience nature via other options that will inevitably spring up—perhaps a zip-line ride down the gorge, a narrated raft trip, or paddleboard yoga.

When you're ready to relax, grab a bite to eat and a craft brew at a local restaurant, enjoy some live music at the pub or brewery, or shop in our locally owned small businesses lining Skowhegan's historic downtown. While our current retail and restaurant offerings are limited, we expect to see new businesses popping up when the whitewater park is constructed.

The Skowhegan River Park (formerly Run of River) is the cornerstone of Skowhegan's Strategic Plan for Community Transformation. We know that whitewater river parks are proven tools for economic development. It's a project that will kick-start our economy and improve the qualify of life for Skowhegan's residents.
