Fundraising

Main Street Skowhegan is raising funds for the Skowhegan River Park via grants, private donors, and foundations. Since 2016, we've raised $12.5 million to cover the cost of environmental permitting, updated preliminary designs, final construction design, pre-construction services, and construction of both the whitewater park and boardwalk.

  • Construction of Boardwalk Phase 1, a fully funded $2.3M project, will begin in June 2026.
  • Construction of Boardwalk Phase 2 will begin in summer 2027 and is also fully funded at $3.125M.
  • Main Street Skowhegan is actively raising funds for Phase 1 Construction of the Whitewater Park, as well as the remaining phases of the boardwalk.

Main Street Skowhegan has raised $5.4 million to cover the costs of construction phase 1 and 2  of the riverfront boardwalk in downtown Skowhegan. We are anticipating an additional $6 million will be needed to complete the 1,000-foot boardwalk from the Old Mill Pub to the municipal building.

Future fundraising phases will cover costs of other project elements, including:

  • Trail expansion—including single-track mountain bike trails—for an estimated 50+ miles of trails, with most accessible via downtown Skowhegan
  • A second wave feature for whitewater playboating in the downtown river gorge
  • An extended promenade that will stretch all the way to Kennebec Banks Rest Area on Route 2 (2 miles east of downtown)
  • Maintenance and operations funding to ensure sustainability of river park infrastructure

Many, many thanks to all Skowhegan River Park supporters.
