Tourism & Events

The Skowhegan River Park is designed to be both a community gathering place and a regional destination.

Throughout the year, the park will host a wide variety of activities ranging from local celebrations and educational programs to regional competitions and nationally recognized outdoor recreation events. These gatherings will help strengthen community connections while introducing new audiences to Skowhegan, Somerset County, and the Kennebec River.

One of the River Park’s unique advantages is its ability to support multiple types of events. Community festivals, outdoor concerts, family activities, paddling clinics, environmental education programs, volunteer projects, and cultural celebrations will activate the riverfront throughout the year and provide opportunities for residents to gather and connect.

At the same time, the River Park is being designed to accommodate larger recreational events that attract participants and spectators from across the Northeast and beyond. The whitewater park, adjustable surf wave, river access improvements, and spectator-friendly viewing areas will position Skowhegan as a destination for paddling competitions, river surfing events, outdoor festivals, and other recreation-focused gatherings.

Even before construction of the whitewater park is complete, Skowhegan is building momentum as a paddlesports destination. In 2026, Main Street Skowhegan secured funding to establish a canoe and kayak slalom course in the Kennebec River Gorge. The course will support youth development, paddlesports instruction, training opportunities, and competitive events while laying the foundation for future regional and national competitions.

These events generate benefits that extend well beyond the river. Participants and spectators stay in local lodging establishments, dine at local restaurants, shop at local businesses, and explore the broader region. This activity supports small businesses, creates economic opportunity, and strengthens Skowhegan’s visibility as a destination for outdoor recreation and community experiences.

Like many successful river communities across the country, Skowhegan sees events as more than entertainment. They are a way to bring people together, celebrate local assets, support the local economy, and create memorable experiences that inspire residents and visitors to return again and again.

The River Park will help transform the Kennebec River from a scenic backdrop into an active and celebrated part of community life.
