Public Access

For generations, the Kennebec River shaped Skowhegan’s history, economy, and identity. Yet despite its importance, access to the river has remained limited. Steep riverbanks, aging infrastructure, and a lack of public access points have made it difficult for many residents and visitors to fully experience one of the community’s greatest natural assets.

The Skowhegan River Park seeks to change that relationship.

Through new river access points, the Riverfront Boardwalk, expanded trail connections, and accessible waterfront amenities, the project will create safe, welcoming opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to connect with the river. Whether launching a kayak, casting a fishing line, attending a community event, walking along the waterfront, or simply enjoying the view, residents and visitors will have new ways to experience the Kennebec River.

The project includes a staircase connecting downtown to the north riverbank, an ADA-accessible pathway from Debe River Walk on the south bank, and a network of trails and gathering spaces designed to bring people closer to the river. These investments remove barriers to access while helping create a more inclusive and connected community.

Public access is about more than recreation. It is about ensuring that everyone can enjoy, appreciate, and benefit from one of Skowhegan’s most defining natural resources. By reconnecting downtown to the river, the River Park will strengthen community identity, improve quality of life, and create new opportunities for future generations to experience the Kennebec River firsthand.
