After 27 years of planning, Skowhegan's riverfront vision is moving from concept to construction.

Join Main Street Skowhegan as we celebrate the start of construction on Phase 1 of the riverfront boardwalk—a major milestone in the effort to reconnect downtown Skowhegan to the Kennebec River.

Phase 1 includes 4,187 square feet of ADA-accessible northern white cedar decking along the downtown riverfront. Once complete, the boardwalk will create a welcoming space to gather, walk, relax, and experience the river at the heart of our community.

The boardwalk is the first phase of the broader Skowhegan River Park vision, a transformational initiative that includes expanded river access, trails, public gathering spaces, and the Northeast's first adjustable whitewater surf and kayak wave. Together, these investments will strengthen community connections to the river while creating new opportunities for recreation, tourism, and economic growth.

What to Expect

The June 29 groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public. Community members, downtown business owners, project partners, funders, and local, state, and federal elected officials are invited to gather on Skowhegan's riverfront to celebrate the start of a project decades in the making.

The program will include remarks from project partners, a ceremonial groundbreaking, project renderings, and opportunities to learn more about the future of the Skowhegan River Park. Information tables will feature project maps, FAQs, and opportunities to sign up for project updates as construction progresses.
